Recipe: Canna-Caramel Hot Chocolate
Winter is coming - and that means it’s time to enjoy some delicious Hot Chocolate! If you’ve never made your own hot chocolate from scratch (if you can call 3 ingredients “scratch”), then you’re in for a real treat here - trust us when we say that after the first sip, you’ll never go back to those sacks of powder with their tiny marshmallows! Our hot cocoa is made even more decadent through the addition of a hearty portion of caramel sauce, imparting savory sweetness - and cannabinoids!
Not only is the caramel kick a perfect compliment to the chocolatey goodness of this drink, the Myrcene and Linalool terpenes help ensure reliably calming effects from our Relax caramel variety (available at retailers across Oregon). The natural terpene profile and THC of our Oregon Roots’ Purple Widow strain-specific canna-butter provide an enjoyable body high that’s ideal for relaxing by the fire on a cold night.
This recipe is made with couples in mind, and makes two mugs of cannabis-infused hot chocolate with a THC dose of 25mg each, perfect for slow, prolonged sipping and gradual dosing. If 25mg is above your edible THC comfort threshold, consider adding a small portion of the caramel to your mug and pouring the hot chocolate over it to reduce your dose. When in doubt on dosing, as with all edibles, start low and go slow on consuming to avoid accidental over-consumption, and if you do find yourself feeling the effects of a THC over-consumption, use the tactics in our blog post to help yourself feel better.
1 + 1/4 cup whole milk
3/4 cup heavy cream, plus 2 tbsp for caramel sauce
1 large milk chocolate bar, approx. 90g total
10 Kraft caramel candies, unwrapped
2 Periodic edibles Relax Cannabis Caramels
Whipped cream topping
Heat the caramel candies, non-infused and Periodic edibles together, with 2 tbsp heavy cream over a gentle double boiler (or in the microwave) while stirring frequently until fully melted. Set aside. Finely chop the chocolate bar, reserving a few squares for chocolate shaving garnish.
While caramels are melting, mix milk and cream in a small saucepan and simmer over low-medium heat until steaming, about 10 minutes.
Remove the heated mixture from the heat and immediately add the chopped chocolate and most of the caramel sauce, reserving a few teaspoons for final topping drizzle. Stir vigorously with a rubber whisk until all ingredients are melted & completely incorporated.
Immediately transfer hot chocolate to mugs, top with whipped cream before drizzling with caramel and sprinkling with chocolate shavings. Sip hot chocolate through whipped topping for maximum deliciousness.
