Recipe: Canna-Caramel Apple Butter

If baked goods aren’t really your jam, then this homemade edible recipe is the one for you. This is also a perfect recipe to use up any apples you get during Oregon’s amazing apple orchard season! This super simple procedure turns fresh apples into sweet, spreadable apple butter in just a few steps, and the addition of our cannabis caramels ups the savory sweetness, as well as giving delightful cannabis effects. Since apple butter on toast is such a perfect quick breakfast, we made this one “wake-and-bake” friendly with our Active cannabis caramel variety (available at retailers across Oregon), made with Blue Dream strain-specific Canna-Butter and Pinene and Limonene terpenes, perfect for an energizing morning treat!

Pro-tip - if you want to make this one even easier, you can follow the steps to create the infused caramel sauce and simply mix it into prepared apple butter! Just go for a variety that isn’t already overly sweet as the caramel will add a sugar punch.

This recipe will make about 24 - 1 tablespoon servings of apple butter (a total of about 1-1/2 cups) with an approximate THC dose of about 4mg each (if two Periodic caramels are used). Use 3 caramels if you’d like your dose in the 6mg+ per tbsp range, or be extra generous with your apple butter spread to increase the dose :) When in doubt, as with all edibles, start low and go slow on consuming to avoid accidental overconsumption, and if you do find yourself feeling the effects of a THC overconsumption, use the tactics in our recent blog post to help yourself feel better.

Ingredients

2 lb. firm apples (like Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, or McIntosh)
1/2 tbsp canola oil

3/4 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 cup prepared caramel sauce

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Peel and core apples, and cut into eights (you’ll notice I accidentally forgot to peel my apples in my pictures - the end result was still delicious, as the peels soften up significantly, but you’ll get a smoother butter if you peel your apples first). Toss with canola oil and bake on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet for about 1-1/2 hours, until golden and roasted. Set aside to cool slightly. Once cool enough to handle, place apples into the bowl of a food processor and puree just slightly.

  2. Over a gentle double-boiler, melt the Periodic edibles cannabis caramels until completely melted. Mix in the cup of non-infused caramel sauce and stir completely to incorporate the cannabis compounds throughout the entire sauce. Set aside to cool slightly.

  3. Once the caramel sauce is ready, stream the whole batch into the food processor and puree until slightly smooth. Add the lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt and pulse to combine until the butter is thick and mostly smooth with a slight applesauce texture. Transfer butter to a mason jar or similar sealable container for storage (be sure to label it as containing THC!). Serve your caramel apple butter on toast, in pastries, as a dip for fruit, or just eat it by the spoonful :)

And you’re done! We hope you love this recipe, and feel free to send us any feedback or tag us in your social media pictures (@periodicedibles) if you try this one yourself!

Enjoy your edibles responsibly, and be sure to store any leftovers in an airtight container clearly marked with *CONTAINS THC* to avoid accidental consumption incidents.
